Top 5 places to drink tea and eat a slice of cake in Sintra

If you're a tea lover then Sintra is the place for you.

As a picturesque Portuguese village in the center of the Sintra Mountains outside Lisbon, Sintra offers the perfect scenario for a slice of cake and a cup of tea.

Café da Natália

Outside of the busy Sintra village, in St Pedro of Sintra, Café da Natália first opened its doors in 1985 to a sweet world of homemade pastries and cakes that remains today. Even though Natália's pastries and cakes are delicious on their own they partner up amazingly with a warm cup of tea from their endless tea selection. Whether you go for an early breakfast, a coffee after lunch or an afternoon snack you won't be disappointed.

Café Saudade

When you visit the center of Sintra village (which you probably will) and you start to feel a bit hungry, we recommend you make a stop at Café Saudade. An ancient «Queijadas» (a traditional pastry from Sintra) factory from the 19th century, named «Queijadas da Mathilde», now remodeled into a vintage cafe and tea room. Best know for its homemade cakes, scones XL and Gorreana tea from Azores it will make you forget all the fuss from the everyday life. It is their mission "To provide with quality an authentic Portuguese experience for every visitor to Sintra". They also offer accommodation  in their Chalet Saudade, a vintage guest house.

If you're feeling a bit more fancy than you normally feel, then you should be heading towards Espaço Edla (Edla Space). Espaço Edla gathers in one place a tea room, a pastry shop, gourmet products, art space and local accommodation. A culture based space where you can enjoy a great variety of pastries, like pancakes and croissants, with, of course, a rich tea selection.

Dona Maria

There's just something about tea and pastries that asks for some kind of finesse. Well, a restaurant and a tea room, raised over the old Hotel Vitor, an old hotel featured in the famous novel "Os Maias" from the also very famous Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós, with two exquisitely ornate rooms, painted by Luigi Manini, architect of the Regaleira Gardens, and a terrace overviewing the Sintra Moutains, will provide that finesse for you. The pastries range from sliced cakes, to scones with an assortment of jams, and as for the teas, they're Theodore, a renown french tea brand.

Piriquita

This post wouldn't be complete without mentioning Piriquita house. In order to get the full Sintra experience this is a place you just don't want to miss. It was founded in 1862 as a family project, which still remains today, to bake the famous Sintra pastry «Queijadas». It was only later on that they introduced, the now also very famous, «Travesseiro». With over 160 years of renown it is as present as the day it began.
